Opportunity Cost
“Then He said to them all, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Luke 9:23
Microeconomics is a compulsory subjects for my Business Management degree that I avoided for six years. I love giving presentations at university, I don’t mind exams, essays are annoying but please don’t mix maths and graphs in with the words – then I am a very unhappy student. And this is why I’ve been dodging Microeconomics.
Amazingly, or not, God still managed to teach me through this weird subject. Micro- economists have this term “Opportunity Cost” with its own special graph. The basic concept is that in economics, as in life, you have to give up one thing to get another. For example you give up time and money (cost) to go to university and get an education (opportunity); you give up the opportunity of growing wheat to grow potatoes in the same ground; you give up a new pair of shoes to go to dinner with your friends etc.
In Luke 9:23 Jesus very clearly outlines the Opportunity Cost of following Him. If you want to take up the Opportunity of eternity and be Christ’s disciple the Cost is to daily take up your cross, daily lay down your life, and follow Him, do as He asks, live life as Christ commands, not as you wish.
Of all the Opportunity Cost decisions we face in life this should be the easiest but is often the hardest. However, Jesus Himself is willing and waiting to help us with the Cost because He believes the Opportunity so out ways the Cost!

Each day is full of opportunities until it is spent. Once spent, the day can’t be undone. Perhaps this is why living as a Jesus-follower is such a day-to-day thing as I constantly struggle between focusing on God or following my own agenda.
You should put your first 2 sentences under “Solomon Says” as they make a great quote! It is very true.
I was at a conference recently when a speaker put up a list of excuses like “I don’t have TIME”, “It’s not the right TIME” etc but he changed the word “Time” to “Life”. It really made me think about how I use my time because really, our time is our life. So which opportunities am I going to spend my LIFE on today? The value of a day makes it worth talking to God about before you start spending it.
Thanks for your insights Faye. They have made me think…
Well done. Very challenging. Yes, you won me over.
